Our fingers threaded together as I followed José through the arena to our seats. Any other time, I would do a little freak out, holding a guy’s hand in public, especially during such a testosterone-filled sport like boxing, but I was proud of having José as my date. He was special and worth my little dips in anxiety.

The arena was loud with music and people yelling, and the fight hadn’t even started yet. I had never been to a fight before, though I’ve been to a few basketball and football games, it didn’t take much to get caught up in the moment, filled with excitement and the primal need to compete. I had always been more of a pacifist, not enjoying violence. Ironic considering the mob paid me for a living, but Dr. Miller did whatever he could to get funding for people in need, even if it meant it came from blood money. To put dirty money to good use.

To my amazement, José led us all the way to the front, though, I should have known better. Finley was Ferguson’s older sister, after all. She had raised him since he was a teen while she’d been in college after someone murdered their parents. They had worked for the Irish mob, which was an occupational hazard.

She’d worked at the clinic with us for several years before marrying Callum O’Callaghan, also a member of the mob as a hacker. She retired to become a mom and continued with Callum’s physical therapy after learning how to walk again. He would never be the same, but at least he could walk now.

José let go of my hand and reached for Finley, giving her a huge hug. She was beautiful if you were into women, with long dark brown, wavy hair, pretty blue eyes, with freckles on her face. She had that pretty girl-next-door vibe and wore no makeup. Now she glowed from being pregnant.

“It’s so good to see you, Fin,” José said.

“You, too.”

Then she turned to me with a knowing smile and pulled me into a hug. “It’s so good to see you, Jonas. I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to see you and José together, two of my favorite people, next to Callum and Fergs, of course.”

I chucked. “Of course.”

“Ah, so this is the giant I’ve been hearing so much about recently,” quipped Callum. He was in his thirties, with nearly black, wavy hair that fell below his ears. He sported a short beard, and his gray eyes twinkled with humor. Callum balanced himself with forearm crutches when he stood up to greet us.

I shook his hand and smiled. “Nice to meet you.”

“You, too. Gee, José, couldn’t you find someone bigger? He doesn’t quite dwarf you enough.”

José rolled his eyes but laughed. Callum’s snarky comments were well-known. “He’s perfect. What’s it like to have someone smarter and prettier than you?”

Callum barked out a laugh. “A little humbling, but it’s worth it to have Fin in my life.”

After catching up, the announcer came into the ring and introduced the fighters for the night.
